Born in Hong Kong, Andrew Lam received his BSc in Urban / Regional Planning and Analysis from Buffalo State University. In 1989 he achieved his MSc in Urban Planning from the University of Hong Kong.
Following his studies from Buffalo State University, Andrew Lam returned to Hong Kong to begin his professional consultancy career. He was twice "runner-up" to the Hong Kong Planning Department as a consultant and urban renewal specialist. In 1992 he became a partner of City Planning Consultants Limited, and was involved in numerous policy, and project planning activities in Hong Kong and Mainland China. In 2002, he became Executive Director of Hong Kong's Urban Renewal Authority, where his responsibilities included all planning and development business for the agency. In 2006, he joined the planning and design firm, EDAW as a Principal and Executive Director, extending his repertoire throughout the Asia Region, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
In1998 Andrew Lam was elected President of the Hong Kong Institute of Planners. In 2007 he was appointed a member of Hong Kong's Antiquities Advisory Board. He is an active member of the public who is committed to protecting cultural life; improve the betterment of the built and natural environments; and to further sustainable development in Hong Kong and China.
